Steven Holl ArchitectsConsidered one of America’s most important architects, Steven Holl is recognized for his ability to blend space and light with great contextual sensitivity and to utilize the unique qualities of each project to create a concept-driven design. In 1976 Steven founded Steven Holl Architects in New York.

The firm’s online portfolio is very impressive, from residential houses to commercial and institutions. I was particularly impressed by the firm’s architecture project for the School of Art & Art History Building, University of Iowa.

An architecture project which was announced by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as a recipient of the 2007 institute Honor Award for Architecture, the profession’s highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture. The building was cited for its “remarkable, structural clarity,” and also stating that, “Its sculptural form outside continues inside to create functional light filled spaces…The building works from the inside out and makes the possibility of art interactive…It’s not a destination; it’s a pathway.”
