I always find that one of the most interesting ways to create an ambiance in a room is by using lights. The Future Flora lights are a collection of pendant lamps that manage to do this in a sophisticated, creative way. Imagine walking into a room, turning on the light and suddenly it is transformed into a “living bouquet”, your own private tropical jungle. With a little imagination you can almost hear the noise of parrots and waterfalls and smell the blooming foliage.
By combining technology and art, Dutch designer Tord Boontje has created for Artecnica this flower shaped system of lights. Though they have a very distinct floral feel to them, they are not a replica of any specific flower but more of a general characterization.
Each lamp consists of many different formed flowers, all with delicately designed thin silver petals. Each flower is connected to the other and together they create a new “species”. As Boontje himself described the process he went through:
“Although I started by looking very closely at flowers, it became a project from memory, to imagine shapes which are like flowers but not exactly, a new kind of species – a flower and light hybrid”.
The lamps are made of precision-etched, stainless steel metal sheets with a silver matte surface. Although the look is very modern and minimalistic the forms and layers have a very organic feel to them. Reminiscent of exotic blooms, they cast a light that instantly creates an atmosphere that is both warm and friendly and even a little exciting.
What I love the most about the Future Flora Pendant Lights is how with a simple flick of a light switch I get a whole new, multi-sensual experience. This lamp is definitely an ambiance maker.
