Sometimes architecture has to deal with a very particular concept: ephemerality. In Shoham, Israel, Pavilion 2012 arises from the ground as an outstanding example of contemporary prefab building that works as an object!
The program for this transitory architecture is focused on creating a distinctive place to sell a future residential project for a large real estate. Some are born to last indefinitely…some are born to live for a short period of time! In this special case, Pavilion 2012 will be demolished in a year’s time, so a peculiar approach was developed in order to turn this building into a unique study case: a single ground floor with 300 sq. m. assembles the entire sales office program.
The most remarkable aspect of this pavilion is its prefab conception. The whole structure was designed and built in just three months! It was built entirely from a metal skeleton (lightweight construction), most of which was built in the factory and transported to the location for erection.
Surprisingly a small amount of curious details turns this architectonic sculpture into a dynamic place to be: reflecting pools create illusions and reflections while internal patios with trees suggest extra volume and space inside the pavilion.
Also a geometric pattern of vertical wooden slabs serves as the artificial skin that divides the rooms or as a texture imprinted on the entire facade. Full height windows allow daylight to invade all the interior without any kind of restrictions…Constant references to multiplicity, plurality, flexibility, reversibility and an infinite capacity of transformation, which an ephemeral object arouses inevitably, tell us that a stage language is being spoken here.
