A discrete silhouette placed on an infinite rural horizon… That’s House on Limekiln Line. The special ingredient for this artificial chameleon relies on its dialogue with the local culture and landscape, engaging a rich relation with the larger ecological and environmental processes of the enormous agricultural landscape in which the house sits.
In fact, the project is composed by a single story volume with only 85sqm of constructed area. The distribution of the program follows a principle of a service core placed in the middle of the plan while the rest of the areas are disposed around or above it.
A deck leads to the entrance where a closet separates the hall area from the bedroom. The kitchen, bathroom and technical closets are concentrated in the so called service core, where a small staircase guides us to a mezzanine zone used as a study and storage area. The living room is placed in the opposite side of the house served by an enormous porch at one side and a narrow deck at the other. Everything seems to be developed in order to obtain the best views over the infinite landscape…
The house is off-grid and uses sustainable measures that reduce operational and embodied energy consumption. Solar orientation eases passive heating and cooling. Triple glazed windows – along with a highly insulated envelope of galvanized steel sheets – ensure that energy consumption required to supply the residence is low. The white painted ceilings and walls generate an expanded sense of space contrasting with the polished smooth concrete floor. Outside, a vast rural horizon earned a new companion to share the everlasting change of seasons…
