At first when I saw this sculptural piece, the word “Chair” didn’t necessarily come to mind. A futuristic rocket, maybe… By successfully utilizing chrome-plated steel, LA-based product designer Carlo Aiello created the Parabola Chair – an award-winning perforated piece of furniture with a minimal frame and a super dynamic form. How amazing would it look in your living room or office?
Now, this is where it becomes a bit tricky…A parabola is a two-dimensional, mirror-symmetrical, U-shaped curve. And by looking at this chair we can see that is features curvatures in two directions, however its intricate layout reveals straight components. How wonderfully smart.
When asked what inspired him to create this unique chair, Aiello replied,
“I have been fascinated by chairs since I can remember and I have always wanted to design one. Last summer I decided to embark in the mission and my first goal was to create a chair inspired by mid-century simplicity but radically new, something that we have never seen before. After several iterations I envisioned a highly sculptural chair but easy to manufacture. A chair in which the armrest, backrest, and seating derive from a single surface that exhibits curvature in two directions but formed by only straight steel rods. The solution came from the mathematical studies of parabolas – thus the name.”
The chair will be exhibited during the ICFF International Contemporary Furniture Fair on May 18-21 in New York, and it is currently on display at Bergdorf Goodman windows.
