Storage and Five Boxes: Teaching An Old Box New Tricks

A vertical and horizontal shelf in orange and grey, plus a horizontal shelf and a sideboard in grey and yellow composite the Storage and Five Boxes series. Based on square pole metal frames, and using standard vinyl boxes found in most hardware stores, the piece is a song to simplicity.

Using a standard design module (the quasi-iconic plastic box in the images) and sexing it up means that this piece is practical and high-design. Tubular, angular steel in a chunky width encloses the plain grey boxes, so color and simplicity stop the piece being, just, dull. What’s more there are smart components including the box guide rails and the tilt stops to hold them in place.

You could see these in an industrial-cum-commercial space (think restored warehouse showroom, or container cafe), or juxtapose in a period building. The modular concept means that there is a lot of flexibility – Storage comes in 3, 6 or 12 box units, both pieces come free hanging or on a stand, and there is a vertical and horizontal solution.

We also like their suggestion of combining (bang-on-trend) color ways, and you could also experiment with colored boxes (though the plain grey is very nice). As they say in the furniture outback – if a design ain’t broke, why fix it?
