Dutch Barn Renovation through Color

Barn renovations are sacred grounds for me and if you add color, I’m in heaven! In the Dutch countryside interior designer Larissa Van Seumeren and her partner, Peter Kool, have given a new life to an old barn through color. For the couple and their two children, they’ve created a home with nineteenth century soul and modern colors and comfort.

Ingenious swaths of color unite the large living room, kitchen, and dining in to a vibrant inviting space. By using work tops only, without upper cabinets, the kitchen is open and spacious. The garden beyond the large glass wall expands the space even further. A wall of storage fulfills remaining kitchen needs.

The mod orange dining table is surrounded by a seemingly random blend of a bench and chairs that have been worn in for you. An open weave basket pendant mimics the weave of the black iron rail of the loft. Modern comfy sofas nod to the past by enlarging the fabric prints your grandmother may have used. I can see the family and friends lounging in front of the fire or cozy with a good book in the reading niche.

Color continues to enliven the space in a library and study area where the wood framing and the floor above are painted barn red. Even the books here are color coordinated.
