Let’s see, should I choose views of the ocean or views of the coastal mountains? This remarkable home for three generations gives you both! The center of the H-shaped plan is an expansive living and dining area. Instead of only windows, Butler Armsden Architects used large sliding doors on both sides of the room to let breezes and views spill right in. This lets you enjoy the outdoors even when it’s raining!

Flanking the central living space are the kitchen and family bedrooms. Every room has exposed wall and roof framing to mimic the construction of early California beach houses. A monochromatic palette is used to bring the beach inside. Just imagine all the colors of the sand and water and sky on a hazy day. Then bring in those natural textures of billowy grasses and sun-bleached wood and supple warm sand.

The easy and elegant dining chairs wear fabric strapping like their fold-up outdoor cousins. Reed chairs, roomy and deep, wear nubby linen sink-in cushions.

Blonde wood floors flow through the home and wrap up the walls of every room, to varying heights. Khaki paint washes above the wood walls and over the ceiling and visible framing. Blue is the only other color allowed inside and you’ll find it only used in those things that provide comfort – a bedroom wood stove, a bed side hand-made rug, fabrics, and dreamy cushions.
