As an Eco-friendly architecture buff I was glad to hear about a new kind of prefab called Mesocore Homes. It’s actually an interesting hybrid combo consisting of a shipping container and prefabricated components. This unique house ships as a 20′ container, but once placed at the final building site it expands to a 1000 sq ft green sustainable home with off the grid capabilities.
The hybrid Mesocore home is based on a structural steel chassis fitted with two full bathrooms and a kitchen with all finishes, fixtures and appliances already installed. All the remaining construction materials – exterior wall panels, ceiling and floors, roof membrane and insulation – are prefabricated in the factory and packed into the container. Once it gets to the site construction materials should be simply lifted and fastened into place.
In terms of sustainability, this prefab includes green features such as utilizing rain collection, via a built-in integral roof system, and renewable solar energy. On top of that, the steel core is so durable it is capable of withstanding extreme forces of nature, from the strongest hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.
Interior spaces are completely customizable for either a 2 or 3 bedroom home. The unit can also serve as a home office, an artist studio, guest room, and more. The basic model starts at approx. 55,000 USD yet varies depending on finishes, various systems, etc.
What makes this house so affordable is the fact that it’s based on a singular design with a minimum of options, making components and manufacturing methods repetitive and cost effective. According to the company, it should take as little as 2 weeks for 4 people, with no construction experience, to complete the house.
