Humlebaek House: simply rich palette

You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate the recreation of this materially rich home. Though I’m certain it will inspire your creativity. Norm Architects employed the structure’s original materials and cast new concrete talent to fashion a studio and home for a working artist.

The ground floor was recast with a heated concrete slab, given a minimal polish, and a glossy epoxy finish. The reflective floor amplifies the day light that peaks through full height slits in the weathered brick central bearing wall.

Living, dining, kitchen, and studio share the ground floor where the exterior walls and ceiling are all plastered in velvety white. Generous snow white storage units are sleekly camouflaged in the entrance. A single line of white base cabinets creates the kitchen, revealed only by their slate grey counter and shiny steel oven.

A rough and rustic wooden dining table that has clearly anchored many joyful gatherings hosts three inky black bubble pendants and four chairs of the same vintage. Multiple French doors and large windows flood the space with daylight. For night time and for reading and creating, there are regularly spaced modern wall lights and funky Jielde floor lamps.

A dramatic black stair, framed by a crisp white wall and hiding storage beneath, leads you to the bedrooms and bath on the first floor. Worn timber and stone framing are balanced by coal colored tile floors. Skylights pierce the gabled roof and cast a glow over the simply rich palette of materials.
