Studio 11: Simply Dressed

Walking into an architectural design firm can seem somewhat daunting. Stuffy offices piled high with blueprints come to mind. Not so at Room 11, all are encouraged to “stop in and say hi”. Room 11 is an architectural company comprised of nine highly creative architects looking to expand the reach of ordinary structures. They strive to create “focused, dynamic environments, encouraging progressive and collaborative design”. A great example of this can be seen in their new storefront/office in Hobart, Australia.

Quietly nestled between a chemist’s shop and news agency, Studio 11 was designed with the specific intention to become more engaged with the public. Moving their offices from a remote rooftop studio, this simple storefront was kept predominately intact except for some minor alterations such as painting the interior a coal black.

What really makes this space extraordinary is the floating wood box that seems to jut out into space. This box has many purposes, including a workspace and mini-storefront to showcase books and publications.

Aptly named “design jams” are held at the steel table in the front window, allowing the public to observe their dynamic interchanges and view the creative process.

Check out their logo, a three dimensional geometric circle that rests quietly against the wall. The contrast between black walls and space age wood box results in a clean and contemporary image to all who walk by and take a peek inside.
