The S Urban bench is an award-winning design created by Madrid-based Veronica Martinez. The design was inspired by nature and specifically by the soft spiral movements that can be seen in so many growing elements such as plants and flowers. For this reason, the shape symbolizes regeneration and constant movement. The subtle flow of the S Urban bench is truly exceptional and Martinez created it in three different mediums- solid surface, wood and Cor-Ten steel.
The solid surface version received first prize at the International Design Contest for Urban Furniture Made in HI-MACS in London in September 2011 (where over 500 projects were submitted).
The wooden version consists of meticulously fitted wooden planks that gently curve to give the bench its unique shape. The wooden version is obviously more natural and strongly conveys the feeling of the constant transformation of wood. The Cor-Ten steel version has a very pronounced presence and a sculpture like feel.
Each bench is numbered and signed and is part of a limited edition. Its dimensions are height 450mm x width 560mm x length 3000mm (or height 17.7” x width 22” x length 118.7”). The solid surface version weighs 120 kg or 264 lbs. and the weight of the wooden and steel versions are dependent on the actual materials used.
