Copenhagen Penthouse II

The design team of Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Ronn of Norm Architects are the dynamic duo behind the design of this stunning 84 sq.m. penthouse renovation in Copenhagen, Denmark. The exterior facade fits into the traditional architecture of the area, but as you enter the home, the unexpected awaits you. A stunning palette of black and whiten home that is remarkable in its simplicity and awakens your senses to new heights.

The owners requested a clean, minimalist design and open floor plan with substantial natural light. A distinctive feature of this apartment is the incredible views of Copenhagen. Wanting to capitalize on this view, non-structural walls were removed and doorways were raised to the ceiling, to further enhance the feeling of spaciousness.

To meet their client’s requirements of clean lines, items such as doorknobs and cabinets pull were hidden to minimize any appearance of clutter. Lighting has been installed wirelessly and can be activated via hidden switches.

I am in awe of someone who can commit to a color palette of predominately black and white. Balancing these spaces with two “non-colors”, allows for the sculptural furnishings, lighting and artwork to take center stage.

In the dining room, four Eames (molded plastic) Eiffel side chairs surround a black parson’s dining table. In the living room, a sinuous Eames molded plywood lounge chair in ebony is a great contrast to the soft gray wool sectional, one of the few pieces that are neither black nor white.

The transparent staircase allows for a harmonious flow from the lower to upper floor and encourages light to flood this sublime home.
