Gravity is commonly defined as a natural phenomenon by which physical bodies attract each other with a force proportional to their masses. However, Buck Mountain House seems to defy gravity with its apparent floating characteristics.

Situated on the steep slopes of Washington’s Orcas Island, this amazing building offers a stunning view over Buck Mountain and its surroundings. Maybe you’re already wondering how is it possible for a house to be floating in such a way… The answer lies in two slim concrete “legs” serving as foundations, delicately touching the rocky mountain side. Porch House: Perfect Countryside Life

Hannah and Paul fell in love with Missouri’s Ozarks area. So they bought a piece of land outside Springfield and started with designing a new family home.
There is a saying: “I may not have gone where I intended to go but I’ve ended up where I needed to be”. This is so true about this project, since at first they wanted a farmhouse, which would be more or less traditional. However, the architect was inclined to push a more modern approach. So there were compromises, there was lots of discussions and persuading, denying and accepting. Continue reading

There’s a house, a very big house in the country… Right in the middle of the green fields of Australia! Cranky Corner House stands as a fresh fragrance of contemporary architecture between old pine trees and luxurious grass.

The ancient concept of a country house was related to a large residence or mansion owned by wealthy families who often spent their vacations in the countryside. In this case, a modern reinterpretation was made and the result couldn’t be more delightful. Continue reading

Hojo House: Impression of Space

I would describe this house as a separate flat, taken out of a residential house and set separately as an independent unit. The apartment is located on an extremely limited site and is itself extremely small. However, it allows you to perceive this house as something airy, and the reason for the unusual exterior of the house! Continue reading

What an interesting structure to be seen from one of the busiest highways of Singapore: among other conventional detached houses of the vicinity, the reddish-yellow segmented wall-and-roof planes stand out extraordinarily. They seem to loyally defend something precious, situated behind them, from the harshness and noise of the road.
The precious thing behind the segmented elevations turns out to be a 4090 sq. ft. private house for a multi-generational family. Continue reading

In the northern coast of New Zealand, where tides continuously erode sandy beaches, there’s a small tower building that discreetly observes these natural movements. The type of program and distinctive characteristics of Hut on Sleds – such as the ability to move from place to place – turn this unique beach cabin into a marvelous inhabitable experience. This house in Sussex has an irresistibly English ambiance… Though perceived as a modern home, it reflects a traditional English-style and makes me instinctively think of the scenery of Agatha Christie’s stories. That’s why I love it. Continue reading

The next project comes from Tehran, Iran, which already sounds quite exciting, doesn’t it? And when I saw the flexible see-through facade skin as a main attraction of this object, I immediately knew I was going to share it with you. The matter is I really love such kind of facade surfaces and am absolutely fond of the fact that they have become so popular nowadays. Continue reading

modern house water 81 - The Water House: Water as a Design Tool

This stunning design object has “arrived” from Lijiang, China. As it is already clear from the name of the house, the project is all about water!
Yet, the water is not dynamic here, no waterfalls or streams are implemented here – the tranquil and huge water surfaces are the main instrument of the architectural design of this house. Continue reading

House in Ovar: the unexpected plasticity of concrete

concrete-house-ovar

One of the most amazing things about architecture is its universality and capacity of being erected with almost every kind of material…From organic sources to industrial production, mankind has often proven in the course of history how to successfully adapt the most unexpected material to construction needs!

Concrete has achieved an important play in modern architecture because of its plastic and sculptural proprieties and this House in Ovar, Portugal, is a great example. In fact, the volume that houses a 680 sq. m. of building area is totally constructed in concrete. And believe me: the final result is simply outstanding thanks to the variety of ingenious solutions accomplished with the use of one simple material. Continue reading
