This modern piece of architecture isn’t named Desert Panorama House for nothing; I mean, look at it… It’s open in almost every direction, with sheltering roof planes that relate perfectly to the horizontal desert landscape. And like the desert climate itself, the house is an array of dualities, combining stone walls with delicate metal and glass doors, open fluid spaces with massive fixed elements.
The house is located on a West facing plateau overlooking a dramatic mountain range at the eastern end of the Coachella Valley – an area known for its extreme summer heat, severe winds and unstable geology.
The design revolves around the concept of providing shelter from the extreme desert conditions, while opening up the living spaces to mountain views and natural light. It is achieved by combining deep cantilevered overhangs, that provide shade, with eighty sliding glass panels that slide away and disappear completely into hidden wall pockets.
Two volumes surround a central courtyard, bridged by a series of large cantilevered roof planes on two stories. Roof planes are supported by two massive fieldstone walls, which combined with Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) walls, provide high insulation.
One volume contains the garage, media room, offices and service spaces; the second volume contains guest bedrooms and a two story fireplace block to block out Northern winds.
