Sometimes the more limited the space, the more inventive the design. Nowhere is this more true than with the YAK House by Ayutt and Associates Design (AAd) – a project that maximizes a modest plot of land to produce a beautiful modern home in Bangkok, Thailand. Despite the lot being compact, the client wanted to emphasize exterior garden space as being central to the conceptual force behind the design. A massive cantilevered second floor activates the garden space below, resulting in overlapping volumes of transitional zones.
Each interior space points out, across, through and down towards the central exterior garden. Large sections of floor to ceiling window panels are strategically oriented to ensure an unobstructed view of the activated ground floor landscape. The most grand of these being the primary living space, which boasts a massive double height space with complete translucency and ability to open up on both sides.
The material choices are limited and subdued, allowing natural light and spatial interactions to take center stage. Interiors are blanketed in white, only pulling back to reveal warm accents of wood and glass – in many cases to highlight circulation and movement. Everything points to the gardens, though.
Such a small site leaves the interiors susceptible to breaches in privacy and exposition. AAd has done a great job in creating an introverted design the only opens to itself, keeping views from adjacent properties to a minimum. The protection, however, never comes at the expense of perforation, as large openings can be found at almost every turn.
The YAK house clocks in at just over 5000 square feet of luxury modern magic over two interlocking floors.
