Sagaform Herb Pot: a perfect little herb garden

I love using fresh herbs. I find that nothing is as satisfying as the smells and flavors that fresh cut herbs add to my cooking. Because I don’t have a “green thumb” I haven’t been very successful at growing my own herbs. I know it’s supposed to be simple to grow them, but all my herb pots seem to die on me.

I purchase my fresh herbs at the farmers market but I always end up throwing most of them out as they don’t keep very well, and drying them defeats the purpose. Then I received the Sagaform Herb Pot, and was introduced to an ingenious way to enjoy fresh herbs. Continue reading

Rook Table Lamp: light with an attitude

modern-table-lamp-rook

The Rook table lamp is one of the highlights of Blu Dot’s new collection of home furnishing. This unique lamp is a playful light fixture with a wide and chunky three-legged, solid walnut wood base with an off-white linen shade and a gray 80” cloth cord.

At first glance it looks very simple but the proportion of the stand and the play of the color contrast between the dark wood and the light shade give it a modern sleek look with a warm feel to it. The Rook has also a playful quality because you can place it on three legs with its shade pointed up, or balance it on a single edge with the shade cantilevered to the side. Continue reading

2D:3D collection: fold it to hold it

storage-2d3d-bludot

I love the 2D:3D collection from Blu Dot. This clever collection is based on the concept of origami: to transform a flat sheet of material into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, without the need for cutting or gluing. Sounds simple? The difference is that this creative group has managed to do this with metal.

Blue dot was founded in 1997 by three college friends who shared a passion for art, architecture, and design. Their goal was to bring good design to as many people as possible by creating products that are useful, affordable, and desirable. In their own words: “the form is almost inevitable, a by-product of the process. Our job is simply to help it emerge as beautifully and as efficiently as possible.” And there is no doubt that their 2D:3D storage and organizing collection is in line with this mission. Civilian Covert Harness Bag: accessible & secure

harness-bag-covert

Whenever I travel, one of my biggest issues is how to pack the important things I need so they are easily accessible and at the same time safe and comfortable to carry around. This is especially true when I need to pack a carry-on bag for flying or when I know that I will be walking around a lot. In both cases I need to carry with me all my valuable documents (passports, visa etc), a camera, iPhone and maybe an iPad, guides and other specific gear and equipment, depending if it’s a hiking trip or sightseeing in a bustling crowded city.

The Civilian Covert Harness Bag is a great alternative to all the bags I have been using till now. It is a backpack/pouch-belt/holster/harness rolled into one so it’s a great solution for all the digital gadgets and other stuff I need to carry. Continue reading

Glass oil lamps: illuminate the atmosphere

oil-lamps-glass-ww

I love candles, I think that they create a wonderful atmosphere and I use them a lot either as centerpieces or as an alternative to traditional lighting. The downside of using them is when we’re sitting outside and there’s a breeze, or if I want to place them on a shelf or mantelpiece I always have to clear the area around the open flame.

The Wind & Weather Oil Lamps are a great alternative. These glass oil lamps feature a chamber sphere suspended from a glass rod within a glass tower. This is very clever because the tower protects the flame, which means I can use the lamps outside without them blowing out and I can also use them inside without fearing I’ll set the house on fire. Caldera ashtray: smoking hot

caldera-ashtray

Even though smoking is not considered “fashionable” or “politically correct”, I still like the romantic concept of smoke-filled salons of the roaring 20’s, filled with authors and artists drinking excessively, smoking and dancing the Charleston.
Though its design is definitely more modern, the Caldera ashtray caught my eye because I could see it fitting in nicely in any party situation – bar, dining room or lawn. Though I wouldn’t recommend smoking to anyone, if you do have a need for an ashtray, at least use the Caldera and put your butts out with style. Continue reading

Living Landscape Ludus: what’s your comfort zone?

lounge-furniture-ludus

What do you feel like doing? Sitting, sleeping, lounging or entertaining, the German-made Ludus Sofa can be arranged to do all that. Designed by Patricia Hopfer for the Mobilia Collection, the Ludus consists of only three cushion parts: a seat cushion, a back cushion and an optional corner back cushion – and a lacquered MDF back part that is also a library.

The system is modular and very easy to re-arrange, it can be a sofa, a bed, a large sleeping area or recliner. The back / shelf unit is a practical storage solution for books, magazines and decorative items you want to keep nearby. The Ludus sofa is an ideal solution if you have limited space or don’t have the budget to buy several pieces of furniture but still want the option of having guests sleep over. Continue reading

Ferm Living Tea Towels: pamper your dishes

designer-tea-towels-ferm

Ferm Living Tea Towels bring the best of Scandinavian design into your kitchen. The tea towel is the product of 18th century England. It was a special linen drying cloth that only the mistress of the house used to dry her precious and expensive china (the servants weren’t trusted to do such delicate work). Even though we’ve come a long way from then and I now own a dishwasher and disposable towels, I still find myself drying my collection of old china dishes (roses and gold leaf) by hand.

The Ferm Tea Towels are ideal for this job, they are made of 100% cotton so they don’t scratch the delicate patterns and they don’t leave scuff marks on the flatware. As with other Ferm products, the prints on the towels are oh-so-gorgeous. Continue reading

Alessi Hot Bertaa Miniature Kettle: small and classic

alessi-miniature-kettle

Alessi is famous for their approach to design, producing practical everyday objects that combine functionality and a powerful sense of style, almost poetic and usually with a humorous twist.

Once again Alessi has come up with a novel idea and developed a series named “Miniature” – perfectly reproducing the shape and the material of the classic Alessi products that have become design icons. Eleven “best-sellers”, carefully chosen from the very top of the range, the most successful projects created over the course of the last 60 years, from the “Bombé” teapot by Carlo Alessi (1945) to the “Mami” saucepan by Stefano Giovannoni (1999).

Thanks to this series, I can now afford to add to my collection of Alessi items, or at least add “samples” of them. Continue reading
