Living in a traditional farm with all the modern comfort – Isn’t this the most amazing combination of all? In Soglio, Switzerland, a vacant structure previously used as a barn has turned into an exquisite single family house.
However, I can assure you that this fine building transcends all the usual solutions of redevelopment… Craftsmanship stands as a distinctive symbol of the magical merge between traditional and contemporary aesthetics.
Respecting the ancient village context, mainly composed by the strong presence of wood and stone, the new barn house has a total 110 sq. m. of constructed area. A steep slope embraces three different floors that present the following program distribution: an entrance at the ground level where three bedrooms and a laundry are also positioned.
A generous courtyard offers a unique sight of the Alps skyline. The first floor contains an open plan kitchen, a living area and a study area which are carefully placed around a concrete stair and fireplace unit.
The second floor reserves the master bedroom and the loggia, where inhabitants may contemplate the rough hewn logs ingeniously stacked to form the facade enclosure and the original roof structure… However, contemporary materials also play an important role in this “resurrected” barn: smooth concrete interior walls are inserted within the existent stone walls while huge voids are screened with vertical oak axes which can be manually operated to obstruct direct sunlight and allow natural ventilation.
One might say that a successful fusion between past and present is perfectly achieved, especially by the craftsmanship of details that blend old and new materials into a residential architectonic masterpiece.
