This light filled duplex in Manhattan’s Union Square belongs to Daniel and Kate Wadia and has been an unexpected dream come true. After finding this space in a Beaux Arts building in the 5th avenue and having priory lived in a two bedroom apartment in the Flat Iron building, their hopes were totally exceeded.

It comes as no surprise as it is like a house in the sky, in two floors, with three exposures and essentially no neighbors to the right, left or behind. Oh my dear, must I exclaim myself, this sounds like heaven on earth! However to reach to the point of transforming this former four bedroom suburban town house into an urban loft bathed in shades of white, the couple worked closely together with Joseph Tanney from Resolution 4 Architecture for about a year.

Several walls on the main floor were reconfigured in order to make one expansive space, visible door hinges, hardware and grills were removed, while lots of hidden storage was added throughout. As a result the couple is enjoying living in a clean, open space with a relaxed vibe, surrounded by numerous windows bringing in endless amounts of natural light.

As for the oak floors’ gorgeous shade you notice, it was achieved after being bleached and white washed twice. And the couple’s overall “reductionist” approach is achieved with neutral toned decor and incorporating few, often sur mesure furnishings designed by Kate herself.

From the architecture to the interior and the details, this is a space I would love to be inhabiting. As a final and a little surprising detail, have you noticed that filled with framed art wall in the small bathroom? Doesn’t it come so welcome in a space where the walls are mostly left in their pretty simplicity – like in the dining area – or featuring large pieces of art?
