Ronn Residence: Barn Sharing in Denmark

If you’ve ever dreamed of renovating an old barn then this will be your dream come true. Julie, a fine artist, and Kasper Ronn, an architect, restored this barn in Sandjev, Denmark. They created two homes within the barn where Julie’s sister and her husband live as well.

Large and bright rooms formed from raw brick walls and polished concrete floors are cozy with their inherent patina. Julie and Kasper’s minimal style honors the original building. Windows are uncovered so that light reaches far in to the home. Where color exists it is accentuated by the neutral background.

In the reading corner, books with bright cases become art as do the mod black chair and white table waiting for you there. I’m always taken by the contrast of metal with concrete and weathered brick as they’ve artfully arranged with a chair and table with metal legs under a half dome pendant.

I can picture their family and friends gathered around the dark grey dining table and chairs. The color, comfort, and character here act as a magnet and probably make for long laughter-filled dinner parties.

In the sky lit stair well, a crystal chandelier shines unexpectedly, suspended from part of the original wood structure. Opposite one of Julie’s paintings bursts from the brick and colorfully takes on aspects of the chandelier.
