Overton House: Turn-of-the-century Modern

One of my favorite palettes is gray with pops of meaningfully placed bright colors. Jessica Helgerson, an interior designer located in Portland, Oregon, is one of those designers who do this effortlessly.

Overton House celebrates the integrity of its architecture with a gracious wave to the past. Textiles are simple, modern and elegant. Lighting, an often-neglected part of interior design, is thoughtfully added to each room. You can’t help but notice the arc pendant light in this living room, jutting out into the center of the space, which also serves a dual purpose as contemporary sculpture.

Creative wall styles are evident throughout this family home; including the dark gray pinstripe of the library walls, which evoke an image of an impeccably dressed man from Savile Row.

Gray can be a tough color to pull off, if done incorrectly; it can feel ominous or even slightly depressing. Jessica’s inspired genius in color selection is unmistakable as we meander through the different rooms and this neutral tone moves from a whisper of gray in the powder room to the rich and dark graphite gray in the dining room.

One of my favorite spaces is the child’s room. An antique four-poster bed repainted in a high gloss lipstick red adds a snap of color and draws your eyes to the toys contained in straightforward fabric baskets. A revived vintage school desk is a perfect place for a child to work on art projects.
