In the heart of exciting and vibrant Amsterdam you’ll find a hotel whose interiors are designed by a local, yet world renowned designer, Marcel Wanders. Housed in the city’s former public library, Wanders endowed the hotel with native personality, history, character, and local life style.
The former occupants of the building, the books, and their contents come back to life in giant graphic representations in two and three dimensions. In the lobby the multi-level glass wall highlights a cluster of crystal pendants floating like constellations. Floating light rings trace the path of stars across the night sky.
Delft blue ceilings define the check-in area where monochromatic rugs chart the sky. Sailing ships and their routes and treasures are depicted in carpets, decorative wall tiles, and as ornament. I could spend hours viewing the high wall of history and modern inspiration. It includes images of architecture, geography, travel, music, government, the sea, flora, fauna, battles, tools, and my favorite, the cornucopia, a universal symbol of abundance. Here it represents nourishment for the body and in the books, for the soul.
Lavish furnishings, all in ivory or ebony, and many by Wanders, provide subdued luxury. Wanders’ bright red tulip chairs are a stunning exclamation point. Opulent chandeliers abound and are overflowing with crystals and fringe.
The guest rooms vary in size and view and all are open plan, including the bath room. A stand-alone vanity separates the sleeping space from the glass faced shower. A crisp pearly drapery divides it form the room’s entrance. Choose a view of the inner garden, the canal, or your very own roof top suite with private terrace.
