Atriumhaus: Mod Pod In Berlin

Having been a fan of the mid century modernist era for the past two decades, I was delighted to discover this home in Berlin’s famous Hansaviertel district.

What makes this renovation even more interesting is the history behind it; this modernist building was a part of the 1957-building exhibition in Berlin’s Tiergarten Park. Eduard Ludwig, who was a member of the Bauhaus movement, designed this home.

Clocking in at 1700 square feet, this two bedroom, one bath contemporary home has been restored to its former glamour by the well-seasoned design team at BFS Design.

Key mid century pieces, such as the sculptural three-dimensional tiles bring in a distinct clean and contemporary feel to the kitchen and bathroom. A pop of black can be seen in the mid-century inspired hanging hearth as it gently rests in front of the darkly swathed living room wall.

In the kitchen, Eames fiberglass chairs firmly anchor the Parsons kitchen table and flat front cabinetry allows accessories to pop. A brass dome pendant fixture provides a vertical counterpoint to the distinctly horizontal line that quietly dominates this area.

Texture used with restraint is a key design element that is utilized in this contemporary home. The floating master bathroom vanity is brought to life with delicate swirls of vanilla and mocha and creates perfect harmony with the wall of sculptural circular tiles.

The redesign of this home was more than a historic renovation, it has also brought new light and life to this graceful modernist home.
