Floating Home

I can’t think of a more beautiful way to drift off to sleep than on a gently rocking boat. This floating home located in Holland is a testament that by utilizing a simple shape artfully, it can be redesigned into a creative structure. Black stained red cedar is the exterior envelope that wraps this home. Local building codes restrict two story buildings, resulting in a clever design by which the architects at Piet Boon built the bedrooms and basement below the water line.

Let’s start our tour on the main floor. Floor to ceiling windows allow the owners of this home to maintain a close connection to nature. When the windows are closed, it creates an interior space similar to a cocoon, allowing respite from the chilly Dutch winter season.

Wood materials create commonality amongst the spaces and by utilizing different textures, sizes and stains allow for this material to shine in several different ways.

Colors are kept to a minimum, allowing the natural view outside to take center stage. I love the large kitchen island that connects the main areas; it is quiet but substantial and allows for guests to gather round while meals are being prepared.

A series of seating are gently laid throughout this floating home, they are all beckoning us to rest. Dotting the horizon are subtly patterned floor and throw pillows, allowing softness to balance the hard base of the wood sectional.

Downstairs, the palette is white and cream. Notice how the color white works seamlessly in the galley style master bathroom, no clutter here!

Textural hangings are the backdrops for this serene and quiet area.

Step outside to enjoy the view. An additional seating area is available to entertain family and friends. Greenery surrounds this home and there is also a diving board and small dock for recreational activities to be enjoyed by all.
