The Grid Vase, from Gaia & Gino, is the proof that with the right inspiration and a most sophisticated design, a so-called ordinary item, could stand alone and serve as a stylish piece to decorate your home with. The Grid Vase was inspired by suits of armor, helmets and fencing masks from various urban influences – the medieval atmosphere of London and the artisan aspect of Istanbul. Continue reading

Henning Koppel Wall Clock: Timeless

wall-clock-koppel

For a couple of months now I’ve been looking for a clock for my kitchen wall. And let me tell you, it’s not as easy as you might think. I knew that a simple plastic clock wont do – what I was looking for was an item that each time I looked at it, the words class and sophistication would come to mind.

In today’s market there are all sorts of wall clocks; you’ve got the simple ones, the themed ones and the designer clocks, which sometimes are so innovative that you literally need to concentrate on what time it is. Yesterday, I stumbled upon the Henning Koppel’s wall clock at Georg Jensen, and it was love at first sight. Continue reading

Ferm Living Tea Towels: pamper your dishes

designer-tea-towels-ferm

Ferm Living Tea Towels bring the best of Scandinavian design into your kitchen. The tea towel is the product of 18th century England. It was a special linen drying cloth that only the mistress of the house used to dry her precious and expensive china (the servants weren’t trusted to do such delicate work). Even though we’ve come a long way from then and I now own a dishwasher and disposable towels, I still find myself drying my collection of old china dishes (roses and gold leaf) by hand.

The Ferm Tea Towels are ideal for this job, they are made of 100% cotton so they don’t scratch the delicate patterns and they don’t leave scuff marks on the flatware. As with other Ferm products, the prints on the towels are oh-so-gorgeous. Continue reading

Water clock: drip drip or tick tock?

diy-water-clock

This cool minimalist clock takes the concept of DIY to a whole new level. I’ve seen many clocks that you can custom make, but they usually consist of an element (the clock and “hands” mechanism) that you can attach to a designed surface of your choice, most common being of course the old LP records!

Designer Kouichi Okamoto, along with ceramicist Daniel Jo, has come up with a new concept that lets you create your own custom-made time piece using water and any vessel you choose. Continue reading

Bold & Noble: The Inspiring Type

uk-print-bold-noble

I was very excited to receive the British Isles Map from UK-based design studio, Bold & Noble. As a graphics designer I value the complexity of their work, and inspired by their beautifully-made screen prints, hand crafted in the old-fashioned way.

From book covers to tea towels to twenty-foot walls, their design work is sensitive and beautifully detailed, featuring gorgeous nature illustrations, typeface compositions and more – all of very high quality. It was extremely hard for me to choose my favorite piece, which in my opinion says it all. Simply charming! Continue reading

Ferm Living Wallpaper: back to the future

home-design-wallpaper-ferm-2

Wallpaper comes in many different designs. For many years they were considered old-fashioned and out-dated. Just hearing the word “wallpaper” would conjure images of English mansions with gilded mirrors and aristocrats drinking tea from fine china, or dusty drawing rooms with old armchairs and cats. After using painting techniques and colors in endless ways, designers have revived the use of wallpaper as an alternative for bringing color and texture into living spaces.

Ferm Living is Scandinavian design at its very best. Inspired by Scandinavian nature, fashion and architecture, they have created a fresh collection of modern, contemporary designs, strong bold patterns with a minimalist feel, with simple color combinations, ideal for any home. Continue reading

Archie Grand Notebooks: the Grand Master of notebooks

Like most people I know, I am very comfortable using all the electronic gadgets out there and they have definitely improved my life. On any given day I can go out with my laptop and continue working while sitting at my favorite cafe, when I travel I take my iPad dispensing the need of carrying five books with me, and my smartphone is a combination camera and mini-workstation. Still, I always carry with me a sketch book and a pencil. Continue reading

Wordless: doesn’t leave you at a loss for words

wrapping-paper-wordless

Too many times I’ve found myself in this situation: I’ m rushing out of work at the last minute to get a gift for a birthday party, dinner party or other festive occasion that I completely forgot about. Luckily I can usually get away with a nice bottle of wine or pampering toiletries but then I get home and I realize I also need to wrap them.

Since the local drugstore wrapping paper won’t do (telltale sign…) and the only available rolls around the house have a Christmassy or baby-shower theme I resort to “home-made” (plain white paper which I decorate with glitter glue or stickers from my girls’ stash). While this is ultra personalized (“it’s not a bug it’s a feature…”) it’s exhausting and then I also need to be creative and add a home-made card to go with it. It seems that the lack of “universal” wrapping paper triggered the idea of the “wordless” wrapping paper. Continue reading
