I have to admit that when I first saw this bed two words immediately came to mind: bent paperclips and waterbeds (!) that being said, I have to point out that I also find the Float Bed a beautifully designed, extravagant and very calming bed that will gently rock you to sleep.
The Float is both minimalist and playful. It consists of four stainless steel cords connected to a frame of wooden rods and steel bows. While sitting on a suspension bridge Max Longin, a mathematician and designer, noticed its nice, calming movement. This inspired him to design a bed that reproduces this perfect sensation to fall asleep to, thus the “Float”.
Because the mattress is connected to the frame by stainless steel cords it sways gently, reacting to your every movement (and just like the good old water bed, this takes a little getting used to). The design of the sleek tubular frame (hence the bent paperclip image…) and the suspended mattress is very streamlined and modern and is like a visual imagery of the word “float”.
The bed is available in ash, beech, cherry, elm, maple, oak or walnut. The wood is finished with a special oil with paraffin components so you can also use it outdoors. It can support a weight of up to 2645 lbs. and designed for easy assembly and dismantling (approximately 90 minutes to assemble). The bed parts also fit together to make its own special transportation case. Float is available at a starting price of $6200.
It really doesn’t matter if you prefer the bridge or the bent paperclip imagery, this bed with its gently rocking movement is addictive and is sure to make you float off into a calm sea of sweet dreams.
It’s good that it can be assembled and disassembled for those vacation purposes. I really like the design and the floating feature. It looks exciting to lie on because I think it’s comfortable too.
