V&A Chairs: a case of uniqueness and oddity

Here are some chairs successfully falling in the range of unique and unusual ones! Designed by Tomas Alonso, the conceptual basis of this one of a kind chairs was to create each of them using one single bent, powder coated metal tube, around which a solid ash structure was made to support the seating surface. Faithful to the whole unusual process, the wood used to create the seating surface was in fact reclaimed Victorian ceiling boards.

Tomas created this series of chairs in order to participate in the event “One Part Chef Four Parts Design”, in Somerset House back in 2009. The designer finds that their slightly unbalanced appearance comes from the strong contrast of materials as well as the asymmetry and the oddness of the connections. What do you think?

I personally find the combination of metal and wood quite smooth, in fact very refreshing – such as when the metal tubes are brightly colored in blue, red or green – and soothing such as when the metal tubes are white. The design’s oddity for me lies in the form, which is unconventional and follows more the principles of creating a piece of art, than an actual chair. That both aspects of functionality and innovative design process are met in his creations is only a good thing.
